Porthcawl, Wales, United Kingdom, March 12, 2008—A massive wave crashes over a harbor wall in the seaside resort town of Porthcawl on Wednesday.

Northern Wales, Ireland, and England were battered by heavy winds and pounding rain during the second band of strong storms to cross the U.K. in three days.

In addition to closing bridges and flooding roads, the latest tempest cut short the prestigious Cheltenham horse racing festival on the second day of the event, the BBC reported.

Madrid, Spain, March 11, 2008—A woman looks at a monument for victims of Spain's 2004 train bombings.

More than 1,800 were injured and 191 people died, when ten bombs exploded on four commuter trains during rush hour on March 11, 2004.

The monument sits outside the Atocha train station, the destination of the four trains.

Manaus, Brazil, March 11, 2008—An indigenous woman protects her child as policemen try to force her and 200 others from a privately owned tract of land in the heart of the Amazon.

Members of the Landless Workers Movement—mostly indigenous Brazilians—tried to resist the eviction with bows and arrows, but police eventually forced them out with tear gas and trained dogs, the Reuters news agency reported.

Seoul, South Korea, March 12, 2008—Snuppy the Afghan Hound—the world's first cloned dog— barks during a photo call at Seoul National University's College of Veterinary Medicine.

Snuppy—born in 2005—was cloned from adult cells by somatic nuclear cell transfer.

A South Korean biotech company affiliated with the lab is offering dog owners the chance to clone their pets. The service will cost up to 148,000 U.S. dollars, according to the Reuters news agency.

Rome, Italy, March 9, 2007—A mostly empty room from the palace of Augustus Caesar reveals the relative modesty of Rome's first emperor.

Crowds gathered on Rome's Palatine Hill on March 9 to witness the reopening of the palace to tourists. The site had been undergoing a painstaking and laborious restoration since shortly after its discovery in the 1970s.

Augustus—also known as Octavian—was the great-nephew of Julius Caesar. Though he seized power during a bloody civil war and led Rome through one of its most influential periods, he was known for being relatively unostentatious in his private life.

London, England, United Kingdom, March 8, 2008—Passersby inspect a home made of newspapers in London's Gillett Square.

The structure, an art installation called "Newspaper House," is the handiwork of a group of artists who wanted to demonstrate the waste created by the city's voluminous free-newspaper circulation.

The artists erected a frame for the construction and then invited citizens to contribute their used newspapers.

Kolkata (Calcutta), India, March 10, 2008—An Indian woman sits near the remains of her home after a fired gutted some 500 shacks in a slum on the southern fringes of Kolkata. The blaze left some 3,000 people homeless, according to news reports.

The fire spread quickly after cooking gas cylinders exploded in several shanties. The area's narrow lanes and lack of ready water stymied firefighting efforts, the Expressindia news service reported.

Worldwide, about a billion people currently live in sprawling city slums with inadequate access to clean water, proper sanitation, or legitimate housing, according to the United Nations.
